There is a little cove called “Island Cove” in La Scie, Newfoundland, the town I used to live in up until a couple years ago. This is the one that is featured in this colorful abstract painting.

While entering the cove one has to walk down a long flight of wooden stairs before finally arriving at the rocky beach below.

Huge steep cliffs surround the entire area, and the sounds of waves rolling in pounds in one’s ears.

Description of the Painting

The beach is filled with round rocks, some big but mostly smaller sized. Walking along the beach, one can see the Horse Islands in the distance, which once held a little settlement quite a few years ago. Besides that, the ocean extends as far as the eye can see.

As you can see from the painting, a huge island jutts out of the ocean close to the shore, hence the name. The sides of this are very steep also, and some people even try to climb it, since its flat at the top. The rocks are shaped by the sea but as one goes further to the top they become more jagged. I painted this by outlining and breaking up the shapes with a thin line of cobalt black.

The left side of the composition features a cliff-side filled with small trees, shrubs, moss, and rock. I used various patterns and shapes to represent those, making them appear intermingled… which they actually are.

A lone iceberg with a crevice is seen here in the distance. Icebergs are very common here in Newfoundland, especially last summer.

The sky is filled with flowing organic shapes, which are both representative of the beautiful northern lights we sometimes experience, and our colorful majestic sunsets as the sun goes down beneath the horizon.

This place has inspired a few of my artworks, as one can imagine. I will try to post more of them here in the near future.
